If you use QuickBooks Online and want to turn on Automated Sales Tax in Housecall Pro, you'll need to have QuickBooks Automated Sales Tax enabled first.
This article walks you through how to do that. The steps are slightly different depending on your current QuickBooks setup. Start by figuring out which path applies to you.
Which path is right for you?
To find which path is right for you:
Log in to QuickBooks Online
Go to All apps > Sales Tax > Overview
If you see a "Turn on sales tax" button, follow Path A below.
If you see your existing tax setup with a "Get started" button, follow Path B below.
Path A: QuickBooks has no sales tax set up yet
First, log in to QuickBooks Online.
Go to your sales tax settings: Navigate to All apps > Sales Tax > Overview.
You'll then see a page that looks like this:
Start the setup: Click Turn on sales tax — this opens the QuickBooks AST setup flow.
Review the information QuickBooks needs: QuickBooks will walk you through what to have ready before you begin.
Next, enter your business address.
Set up your tax agencies: Select the states where you provide services. If you operate in more than one state, you'll also be asked to configure the filing frequency for each.
Review and confirm your settings.
Once you confirm, QuickBooks will take you back to Sales Tax > Overview, and your Automated Sales Tax will be active.
Finally, head back to Housecall Pro: you should now be able to enable Automated Sales Tax.
Path B: QuickBooks has sales tax, but Automated Sales Tax isn't on yet
First, log in to QuickBooks Online.
Go to your sales tax settings: Navigate to All apps > Sales Tax > Overview.
You'll see a page that looks like this:
Start the setup: Click Get started. This opens the QuickBooks AST setup flow.
Next, enter your business address.
Set up your tax agencies: Select the states where you provide services.
Review and confirm your settings.
Once you confirm, QuickBooks will take you back to Sales Tax > Overview, and your Automated Sales Tax will be active.
Finally, head back to Housecall Pro: you should now be able to enable Automated Sales Tax.
📌 Note: It can take up to an hour for your QuickBooks settings to sync with Housecall Pro. If AST isn't available to enable right away, give it a bit and try again.
