Welcome to the Mobile Check Deposit Training Center!

This information is designed to help you and your team learn the ins and outs of using Mobile Check Deposit. We'll take you through the basics of a check and what to look out for when using the feature.

If you're depositing your first check, start with this short video 👇

The Anatomy of a Check

Looking at a check can give you ‘information overload’. That’s why we’ve laid out everything you need to know.

What to 'always' and 'never' do when using Mobile Check Deposit

Bad habits can lead to more checks getting rejected. Good habits, on the other hand, lead to more successful deposits, happy customers, and business owners.

Always

✅ Take a clear photo of the front and back of the check

✅ Keep the check after it's been deposited for at least 14 days

✅ Write "For Mobile Deposit Only" on the back of the check

✅ Confirm the name on the check matches the business name

✅ Confirm the date is correct (no more than 6 months old)

✅ Sign the back of the check before submitting it for deposit

Never

🚫 Attempt to deposit the same check twice

🚫 Submit an old check (6 months or older)

🚫 Accept a check without a front signature

🚫 Submit a check with a date in the future

🚫 Crop out or cover important details on the check image

🚫 Include additional objects in the check image (pens, paper, etc.)

🚫 Attempt to deposit a savings bond

Taking the best image

We'll snap the picture for you but here are some tips on getting the best image quality:

✨ Wipe off the camera lens

Smears and smudges on the camera lens can make images blurry. Take a moment to clean the camera lens before taking pictures of the check.

🔳 Use a dark, solid background

Contrast is key for getting a crisp check image. Try to use a flat, dark surface as the backdrop for your check images.

💡 Create sufficient lighting

On a late-night call? The overhead lights in your truck cab should do the trick. Also, be mindful of shadows or glares when taking your photos. We'll let you know if there's too much or too little light.

🤳 Hold the camera steady

Two hands are better than one! Our camera will have an easier time getting a clear image if the viewfinder is still.

🎯 Center the check in the viewfinder

We need all the information on the check to process the deposit. Centering the check in the viewfinder is the best way for our camera to capture all the right details.

Check 'errors' and how to fix them

A check error will occur when our system detects an issue with your check submission. For the check to be successfully deposited the error(s) need to be addressed.

Here is a list of errors you may encounter and how to resolve them:

THE ERROR: The company's name or the business owner's name is incorrect or missing

THE FIX: Ensure the customer wrote the check to your business or business owner's name before submitting it for deposit. Continue with the deposit if the name is correct, otherwise, the customer will need to write a new check or provide a different payment method.

THE ERROR: 'FOR MOBILE CHECK DEPOSIT' is not written on the back of the check

THE FIX: Confirm that the phrase “For Mobile Deposit Only” is written clearly under your signature on the back of your check. Please write the phrase and take a new picture if needed.

THE ERROR: The check date is incorrect

THE FIX: If the check is dated within the last six months, you can continue depositing the check. If it is older than 6 months or dated in the future your customer must write a new check or use a different payment method.

THE ERROR: The signature on the back of the check is missing

THE FIX: If the back of the check includes a signature, then continue with the deposit. If not, please add your signature on the back of the check and take a new photo.

THE ERROR: The check amount doesn't match the job amount

THE FIX: Confirm the amount on the check matches what was entered into the 'Amount' field. Update the 'Amount' field if necessary. The amount the camera reads on the check is different from the amount on the check deposit form.

THE ERROR: This check has already been deposited

THE FIX: Try a different check or choose a different payment method. The check details match a previously deposited check and therefore cannot be submitted. If you attempt to deposit this check it will be rejected.

THE ERROR: The check images are too blurry

THE FIX: The account and routing number must be captured to deposit these funds. Here are some tips to take a clear picture:

  • Use a dark, solid background

  • Create better lighting

  • Hold the camera steady

  • Center the check

  • Wipe off the camera lens

Do this and we'll take the picture for you.

THE ERROR: The account and/or routing number at the bottom of the check are not clear

THE FIX: The account and routing number must be captured to deposit these funds. Here are some tips to take a clear picture:

  • Use a dark, solid background

  • Create better lighting

  • Hold the camera steady

  • Center the check

  • Wipe off the camera lens

Do this and we'll take the picture for you.

THE ERROR: The signature on the front of the check is missing

THE FIX: Confirm the signature is added on the front of the check before taking the photo. If the signature is not present, then the customer will need to sign the check or provide a different payment method.

THE ERROR: The corners/border of the check weren't detected

THE FIX: When you take a new picture of the check, adjust the distance between the camera and check to make sure the corners are visible in the image.

THE ERROR: The check is too small

THE FIX: The check information cannot be detected by the camera if the image is too small. Try moving your camera closer to the check but make sure the corners and border are still visible.
