Getting Started with Tap to Pay on Mobile

This article describes how to enable and start taking Payments using Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android.

This feature is only available to a select group of beta testers and requires either:

  • iPhone XS or later running iOS 16.0 or later (Tap to Pay on iPhone is not currently available on iPad)

  • An NFC-equipped device running Android 11 or later

Please be sure to update the Housecall Pro app to its latest version.

With Tap to Pay in the Housecall Pro app, you can use just a mobile device to accept contactless payments in-person! This includes physical debit and credit cards that are contactless enabled, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets. Tap to Pay is a secure and convenient way of accepting payments that requires no extra hardware.

Activate Tap to Pay on iPhone for your Organization

To enable Tap to Pay on iPhone for your Organization, please make sure you have the latest version of the Housecall Pro app from the Apple Store.

To set up Tap to Pay on iPhone, the first time you press "Tap to Pay on iPhone" you will be prompted to accept Apple's terms of service and link your Apple ID. The Apple ID should belong to you or your business. The associated Apple ID can be changed later in the Apple portal.

The activation process only needs to be completed once per organization.

Steps to activate tap to pay on iPhone:

When taking payment, select Credit Card option. With 'Save card on file' option disabled, click on Tap to Pay on iPhone.

The Apple onboarding screen will appear. You can continue with the Apple ID associated with your phone or enter a different Apple ID.

Follow the prompts, the success screen will appear below (it may take up to minute to set up). You are now ready to accept payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone!

After you have completed this first activation, Tap to Pay on iPhone will be available on any iPhone in your organization, provided it meets the minimum system (iOS 16.0 or later) and device (iPhone XS or later) requirements. If you still don't see the option, update the HCP App to the latest version.

Accepting contactless cards on iPhone

To accept contactless cards on iPhone, follow these steps:

When taking payment, select the Credit Card option. With 'Save card on file' option disabled, click on Tap to Pay on iPhone.

Present your iPhone to the customer once you see the Hold Here to Pay screen

When you see the “done” checkmark, the transaction is complete

Accepting Apple Pay and digital wallets on iPhone

To accept Apple Pay and digital wallets on your iPhone, follow these steps:

When taking payment, select the Credit Card option. With 'Save card on file' option disabled, click on Tap to Pay on iPhone.

Present your iPhone to the customer once you see the Hold Here to Pay screen

Your customer holds their device over the top of your iPhone, over the contactless symbol

When you see the “done” checkmark, the transaction is complete.

Checklist for Tap to Pay requirements on iPhone:

These are the requirements to enable Tap to Pay on iPhone

  • Device: iPhone XS or later

  • Device: iPhone XS or later, not currently available on iPad

  • HCP App version: 2023.8.16 or later

*Payments accepted through Tap to Pay on iPhone will incur a processing fee at 2.59% during the Beta phase. We will notify you in advance of any changes to the processing fee.

Getting Started: Tap to Pay on Android

This feature is only available to a select group of beta testers and requires an NFC-equipped device running Android 11 or later. Please be sure to update the Housecall Pro app to its latest version.

With Tap to Pay in the Housecall Pro app, you can use just an Android phone to accept contactless payments in-person! This includes physical debit and credit cards that are contactless enabled, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets. Tap to Pay is a secure and convenient way of accepting payments that requires no extra hardware.

Activate Tap to Pay on Android for your Organization

To enable Tap to Pay on Android for your Organization, please make sure you have the latest version of the Housecall Pro app from the Google Play Store.

You will also need to go to your system settings to ensure that NFC is toggled “on” for your device.

Steps:

When taking payment select Credit Card option. With 'Save card on file' option disabled, click on Tap to Pay

Follow the prompts, the success screen will appear below (it may take up to a minute to set up). You are now ready to accept payments via Tap to Pay on Android!

After you have completed this first activation, Tap to Pay on Android will be available on any Android phone in your organization, provided it is an NFC-equipped device running Android 11 or above. If you still don't see the option, update the HCP App to the latest version.

Accepting contactless cards on Android

To accept contactless cards on Android, follow these steps:

When taking payment, select the Credit Card option. With 'Save card on file' option disabled, click on Tap to Pay

Present your phone to the customer once you see the Tap behind device screen

Your customer holds their contactless card horizontally and taps it behind your device

When you see the “done” checkmark, the transaction is complete

Accepting Apple Pay and digital wallets on Android

To accept Apple Pay and digital wallets on your Android, follow these steps:

When taking payment, select the Credit Card option. With 'Save card on file' option disabled, click on Tap to Pay

Present your Android phone to the customer once you see the Tap behind device screen

Your customer holds their device behind your device

When you see the “done” checkmark, the transaction is complete.

These are the requirements to enable Tap to Pay on Android:

  • HCP App version: 2024.7.15 or later

  • Device: Android devices must meet all of the following criteria to use Tap to Pay:

    • Contains functioning NFC antenna and chipset

    • Runs a current version of Android (Android 11 or above)

    • A stable connection to the internet

*Payments accepted through Tap to Pay will incur a processing fee at 2.59% during the Beta phase. We will notify you in advance of any changes to the processing fee.
