Housecall Pro offers access to pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation through our partner Coverdash. Pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation helps eligible payroll businesses manage workers’ comp coverage based on actual payroll, instead of estimating annual payroll up front.
This article covers how pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation works, who Coverdash is, how to get started, and how to manage your policy after purchase.
This feature is only available to organizations onboarded to the Housecall Pro Payroll Product.
What to know before you get started
What is pay-as-you-go workers' compensation?
Workers’ compensation insurance helps cover medical costs and lost wages if an employee is injured on the job. Requirements vary by state, but many businesses with employees are required to carry workers’ compensation coverage.
With pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation, your premium is based on payroll activity. Instead of estimating your annual payroll up front, premiums are calculated using the wages you run through payroll.
How is pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation different from annual workers’ compensation?
With a traditional annual workers’ compensation policy, your premium is usually based on an estimate of your annual payroll. Because the estimate is made up front, you may need to pay a larger deposit when the policy starts. At the end of the policy period, your payroll may be reviewed, and your final cost may be adjusted based on your actual wages.
With pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation, your premium is based on the payroll you run through Housecall Pro. This means your workers’ compensation cost can adjust as your payroll changes, helping reduce the likelihood that you’ll face a large, unexpected bill when the plan is audited at policy-end

Step 1: Review Employee Classifications
Before you can receive a quote, each payroll employee needs a workers’ compensation classification.
These classifications help determine the workers’ compensation rate for each employee based on the type of work they perform. Housecall Pro may suggest a classification based on the employee’s role, but you should review each one for accuracy.
For each employee, you can:
Review the suggested classification.
Search for a different classification.
Contractors do not need a workers’ compensation classification.
Step 2: Review your Quote
After your employee classifications are confirmed, Coverdash will use your payroll information to generate a quote.
You’ll be able to review available coverage options directly in Housecall Pro. Your quoted premium is based on your payroll data, employee classifications, and carrier requirements.
Step 3: Purchase your Policy
Once you review your quote, you can choose whether to purchase the policy through Coverdash.
After the policy is purchased, your workers’ compensation policy will appear in Housecall Pro. You’ll be able to view policy details from the My Money > Insurance page.
Your policy tile may show details such as:
Policy status
Carrier
Estimated premium
Certificate of Insurance
How to keep employee classifications up to date
It’s important to keep workers’ compensation classifications accurate as your team changes.
Add a new payroll employee: When adding a new payroll employee, you may be asked to add a workers’ compensation classification as part of the employee setup.
Update an existing employee: If an employee’s role or type of work changes, update their workers’ compensation classification from their employee profile.
Changes to classifications may affect future premium calculations.
